I Used To Be Funny (2023)

First off, ACAB.

Second off, this was the saddest fucking movie I've seen in a hot minute. I'm sure I spent at least an hour and a half straight crying and the runtime was only 1 hour 46 mins. Went into this expecting a silly Rachel Sennott movie, but my god. She killed this role. Filing this under "Movies I can only watch once in my lifetime because they're so sad".

The NeverEnding Story III (1994)

dir. Peter MacDonald

DNF. Really nowhere near as good as the first two. I had higher hopes on the basis that I read the Jim Henson Company had done the character designs until I saw Falkor! On top of the fact that the entire cast had been changed up. I guess seeing a young Jack Black was kind of cool.

The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990)

dir. George T. Miller

My only complaint was that they changed the actors for Mr. Bux and Atreyu!!!

The NeverEnding Story (1984)

dir. Wolfgang Petersen

Another movie I can't believe I hadn't seen before. Full of so much hope and whimsy! 13 Apr 2025
Mondo Trasho (1969)

dir. John Waters

Can't even begin to understand what was going on in this one. The score was entertaining, though.
Somehow survived the first minute of another unfortunate chicken scenario in a John Waters' movie and managed to finish this one. It certainly paved the way to what his later films would become.

Multiple Maniacs (1970)

dir. John Waters

The church scene was so crazy??? And the lobster??? This one was so fun and ridiculous and I had no idea what would happen next at any point. Definitely will re-watch at some point.

Desperate Living (1977)

dir. John Waters

Yeah, this one was not it for me idk!!! I really missed Divine. As always, Edith Massey was stellar. This one felt more like it was simply shock value than even Pink Flamingos but nowhere near as campy or enjoyable.

"Troubling time, go find someone to love."

Unfortunately I have zero critical thinking skills when it comes to Timothee. I'm a simple guy, I see that twink on screen and enjoy every second. This was an especially wonderful performance by him, though. Got lost in it and forgot it was him acting the role of Bob Dylan.

That being said, the scene of Sylvie coming home after Joan spends the night made me cry really bad!!!! + when him and Joan are on tour and he makes the mumbled comment about his drinking!!!!! What a SHIFT in the tone of the movie!!!!! AND the cigarette through the fence!!!! Jesus Christ.

Cold Skin (2017)

dir. Xavier Gens
Contains spoilers

DNF at about 55mins in. Started watching per the bestie's recommendation, but could not get over how it was basically like if A24's The Lighthouse (2019) and del Toro's The Shape of Water (2017) were one. Not a fan of movies with people having sex with amphibian monsters! Sorry!

DNF
Female Trouble (1974)

dir. John Waters

✰✰✰
"Who wants to die for art?"

This one was over-the-top and ridiculous (in a good way). Making my way through John Waters' filmography slowly but surely.

Pink Flamingos (1972)

dir. John Waters

Don't know where to start with this one. Had a harder time watching it than I thought I would. The chicken scene was especially off-putting. Divine's performance honestly carried the movie. There is something so all-encompassing about her acting. I didn't hate it, but definitely a hard watch overall. John Waters, the man you are.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

dir. Sidney Lumet

✰✰✰✰✰
Robbing a bank to pay for his wife's sex change surgery? No one is doing it like him anymore. This movie was wonderful. The dialogue was so funny. Sweaty bisexual Al Pacino was delightful to watch. Everything about this was genius. Will be rewatching over and over again. 1 Apr 2025
Dead Poets Society (1989)

dir. Peter Weir

Unsure of how I'd gone my entire life without having watched this all the way through. Hate that I had, as a bad tendency, predicted Neil's suicide. Especially after having spent the major part of the movie in awe of how hopeful and optimistic the whole thing felt! Carpe diem. Carpe fuckin' diem.

Caravaggio (1986)

dir. Derek Jarman

✰✰✰✰
A work of art. Every scene in this movie was beautiful to look at. The actors' performances made me genuinely laugh and feel immersed. 29 Mar 2025
The Substance (2024)

dir. Coralie Fargeat

Body horror done right. The last 15 minutes were so campy and felt reminiscent of 80's horror flicks. That alone made the entire movie worth watching.

I did, however, have to split watching this into two because the tooth pulling scene made me sick. Demi Moore killed this role and I am a sucker for Margaret Qualley.

Nosferatu (2024)

dir. Robert Eggers

✰✰✰✰✰
This felt like a classic horror movie and was done SO well. My literal only complaint was Nosferatu straight up looking like Jim Carrey as Eggman. 12 Jan 2025
My Old Ass (2024)

dir. Megan Park

I wish I had nicer things to say about this one, but it was just NOT it. The whole "girl is gay until she finds the perfect Man" thing was so lame. I fully went into this thinking it'd have a lot more Aubrey Plaza screentime and it did not. The real saving grace of this movie was Aubrey Plaza and the Justin Bieber "One Less Lonely Girl" scene during the shroom trip. Other than that, this one kind of sucked and fell extremely short for me.

Life After Beth (2014)

dir. Jeff Baena

✰✰
Might have to rewatch again, but all I can say is that Aubrey Plaza carried this one. 12 Jan 2025
Queer (2024)

dir. Luca Guadagino

✰✰✰✰
Ouch. Daniel Craig played such a sopping wet, pathetic yearning gay man and every second of it fucking hurt. I've been wanting to re-watch this one, but I'm not sure my heart could take it. Having another Trent Reznor score in a Luca movie.... incredible. 15 Dec 2024

"There is still time."
I think watching this with a bunch of cis men was my first mistake, but that didn't stop me from sobbing like a little bitch when I saw the chalked "There is still time". The planetarium scene still haunts me. I really, really wanted Owen to go with Maddie, especially that final time.

Babes (2024)

dir. Pamela Adlon

Ilana's character is better than I ever will be. If I had a meet-cute experience that led to pregnancy and the dude died the day after, I would simply kill myself!

I've rewatched this an unholy number of times. 6 Jun 2024

Again, Timothee can do no wrong. I actually liked this one a lot. 11 Feb 2024
All of Us Strangers (2023)

dir. Andrew Haigh

✰✰✰✰✰
I have never known pain like watching this for the first time, being confused for about 85% of the film, only to be emotionally fucked when I realized what was happening. This one is a hard watch only in the sense that it is just so fucking painful. 3 Feb 2024
Saltburn (2023)

I knew he was going to fuck the grave before it happened so honestly! He wasn't as much of a freak as everyone made him out to be.

Bottoms (2023)

dir. Emma Seligman

✰✰✰✰✰
Perfect movie. This is to me what Booksmart was to me when it'd come out. I've probably re-watched this like ten times since the first watch. I love loser lesbians. 8 Oct 2023
Beau is Afraid (2023)

dir. Ari Aster

✰✰✰
I love a Joaquin Phoenix movie. Albeit, this one did not need to have a 3-hour runtime, but it accurately portrayed what living with anxiety feels like. The vignettes within this one were incredible. 29 Sep 2023
